Prep Time: 20 minutes
Rest Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Yield: 8 bagels
Ingredients:
500g all-purpose flour (divided into two portions: 250g each)
300ml warm milk
1 tablespoon baking yeast (15g)
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 sachet vanilla sugar (8g)
Pinch of salt
Sesame seeds for decoration
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Starter
In a large mixing bowl, combine 250g of flour, yeast, sugar, and warm milk.
Mix until a smooth, thick batter forms. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
Let it rest in a warm place for 30 minutes, allowing the yeast to activate. The mixture should become bubbly and airy.
Step 2: Complete the Dough
After the starter has rested, add the remaining 250g of flour, baking powder, vegetable oil, vanilla sugar, and a pinch of salt.
Mix until everything is well incorporated. The dough should be sticky but manageable.
Cover the bowl again and let the dough rest for 1 hour. It should double in size.
Step 3: Shape the Bagels
After the dough has rested, lightly oil your hands and divide it into 8 equal portions.
Roll each portion into a ball, then poke a hole in the center with your finger to form a bagel shape.
Place the bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Step 4: Decorate and Bake
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
Brush the tops of the bagels with milk or egg wash for a golden finish.
Sprinkle sesame seeds on top for decoration.
Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the bagels are golden brown and fragrant.
Step 5: Serve
Let the bagels cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them plain, with butter, or as a base for your favorite toppings!
